CDs

I buy CDs all the damn time. New release from an artist I love? Trashy release I have faint recollections of in the bargain bin for £1? It’s mine. I don’t have much storage space so I’ve ruled that stacks of jewel cases make for acceptable home decor.

the full horde

Well, I have about 200 of the little pricks laying about and shoving 200 images on one page is a bit far, even for me. If I can get my arse into gear I’ll log the whack of them on Discogs, but for now picture a shitheap of plastic piled in a corner of my living room.

latest finds

Slipknot - Iowa

Slipknot - Iowa (2001)

I had a wee trip out to South Shields market and had a brief flick through some of the CD offerings. I bagged a few classics from my childhood - pictured, obviously Iowa, but I also picked up Slipknot’s self-titled, Rob Zombie’s Hellbilly Deluxe, and Ministry’s The Land of Rape and Honey.

Favourite track: Everything Ends

The Peoples Republic of Europe - Juche

The Peoples Republic of Europe - Juche (2004)

A stunner from a recent Spotify deep-dive. I was initially surprised as I thought I’d stumbled upon an early 00s Marxist-Leninist band promoting the idea of Juche through the power of screeching waves of feedback and ear-bursting harsh noise. Well, not quite. However this has got to be the most progressive music relating to the DPRK that I’ve found, so I’ll happily take this for what it is.

Favourite track: Kim Il Sung Among Workers

Kratarknathrak - Solstice

Kratarknathrak - Solstice (2007)

This album is from Pieter of The Peoples Republic of Europe, and he (I assume it was him sending out the discs!) dropped a free copy of it in with my package when I purchased the above CD and a t-shirt. This is the second time someone’s dropped a freebie album with a Bandcamp order – I don’t deserve this kindness! Excited to get my teeth into this one.

The Joy Thieves - A Blue Girl

The Joy Thieves - A Blue Girl (2020)

Well, this one was a surprise and a half! The guys at Armalyte threw this one in for free to make up for delays in them shipping an order I’d placed a couple months prior. Hello? We’re in a pandemic. I wouldn’t care if a disc took a year to get to me. I hadn’t listened to this before receiving it, but upon listening, I have to say it’s not for me. I do appreciate their kindness though!

C-Tec - Darker_Cut

C-Tec - Darker / Cut (2018)

C-Tec went by a few previous names, and under this specific moniker released two albums - Darker in 1997 and Cut in 2000. You’ll probably know a couple of members in this group: Jean-Luc De Meyer from Front 242 and Marc Heal from Cubanate. Armalyte released the two albums as a double disc which I scooped up during Bandcamp’s latest artist-gets-100%-of-profits event.

Favourite track: I Die Tomorrow from Cut. Makes me wish I could pole dance so I could give this song the justice that it deserves.

She Past Away - Disko Anksiyete

She Past Away - Disko Anksiyete (2019)

I’ve been getting into She Past Away more and more recently. They always struck me as a band that doesn’t give me anything new, no surprises or nothing, but consistently puts out bangers nonetheless. This album is stunning - up until about the halfway point where I turn it off and just go back to listening to Belirdi Gece again.

Favourite track: Izole

Cubanate - Kolossus

Cubanate - Kolossus (2019)

Cubanate dropped off the map for nearly 2 decades after Interference in 1998. They swooped back in with Brutalism in 2017, a re-mastering of a bunch of their older songs, before beating the planet into submission with this EP. This little stunner. This, dare I say it, is a masterpiece. Kolossus is a true no-skip album. Okay, it’s super short, whatever. This EP is just nasty.
